Chapter Twenty-Three

Judging by the direction of the shout, the man had to be up near the ceiling. Nate glanced at Wes and Ellie, seeing his own worry reflected in their eyes. Had they said anything here that might have given away the compass or their mission? He couldn’t remember.

He leaned in close to the others. “If he does anything suspicious, be ready to act quickly.”

Wes nodded solemnly.

Ellie pursed her lips. “Only if it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want another verist getting hurt because we’re too jumpy.”

Nate hesitated before giving his own curt nod. Protecting the compass might require them to take decisive action. If word about the artifact spread, they could find themselves shifting from the hunters to the hunted.

Still, he didn’t particularly relish the thought of attacking another verist. He’d just need to make sure he stayed alert for any signs of trouble before it got to that point.

“Hang on,” he shouted up into the fog. “We’ll see what we can do to get you down.”

“Much obliged,” the faint voice responded.

“So,” he said more quietly, “how in the Null are we going to do that?”

“What about your Frost Shield?” Ellie suggested. “You could just turn it sideways and use it like a floating platform.”

He shook his head. “I experimented with that while we were traveling. The shield can only move a couple feet away from me before the weave destabilizes. I suppose if I put it directly underneath me, I might be able to hover a foot or two off the ground while I concentrate. But that won’t get me to the top of the cavern or stop someone else from falling.”

Wes rubbed his chin. With his Ice Skin still active, it made him appear as some ancient statue carved to resemble a brilliant thinker of old.

“I could try leaping and grabbing him out of mid-air,” he finally said. “That might dissipate some of the impact. If I miss, however, it could be…bad.”

“Then just don’t miss,” Ellie said.

“Actually, now that I’ve said it out loud, I don’t think it sounds like a great plan.”

“We could have Nate try the same thing with his Gusting Boots. Then even if he fails, we get the enjoyment of watching him soar through the air with all the majesty of a falling rock.”

“I don’t see what all this fuss is about anyway,” Nate said, pointedly ignoring Ellie. “Can’t he just jump and let his aegis absorb the damage for him?”

Ellie sighed. “You know it doesn’t work like that. The fall probably won’t kill him, but the force of the impact is still likely to hurt like the Null and break a few bones. Having an aegis doesn’t make you immortal.”

“He’ll recover.” Ellie glared at him, and he hurriedly added, “Look, all I’m saying is we’re clearly not the best-equipped verists to handle a situation like this. We shouldn’t waste any more time here than we have to.”

“There has to be something we can do to help,” she insisted.

“I might have an idea,” Wes said thoughtfully.
